During the first six weeks, students will work through the same case study, skills, and methods taught in Laying the First Stone, ensuring a solid foundation in record analysis, documentation, timelines, and essential genealogical techniques. The final four weeks take the learning to the next level, guiding participants through: More advanced investigative genealogy Complex problem solving strategies Working through record gaps and inconsistencies Identifying ancestors using indirect and layered evidence Incorporating community, cluster, and historical context Applying methods used in professional genealogical research By the end of Following the Footprints, participants will not only master the foundational skills, they will also have practiced real investigative work, strengthened their analytical abilities, and built the confidence needed to take on deeper, more challenging African American genealogy research.

Course Sessions and Schedule Although the booking system will show 12 sessions, please note: Only 10 sessions are live full-class sessions. No classes will be held on December 23 or December 30 in observance of the holiday season. This accounts for the “extra” sessions shown in the booking format. One-on-One Sessions In addition to the 10 class sessions, the course includes two 1-on-1 sessions, which you may schedule at your convenience. These sessions will be used to: Review your progress Answer questions Evaluate your assignments Discuss your individual genealogy goals You may book these sessions at any time during the course period or up to three weeks following the course. Attendance Expectations You are expected to attend all six class sessions. Each session introduces skills and assignments that prepare you for the next. If you must miss a class: You are still responsible for all assignments, readings, and activities from the missed session.
